take the first steps

homeownership process

01

ask and learn

Reach out to Habitat for Humanity - Cape Area, ask questions and connect with one of our staff members so we can provide you with all the information you need to begin your journey into homeownership.

02

your application

Our staff determines that you are eligible for our homeownership program through a careful examination of your application. Your current need, your ability to pay an affordable mortgage and your willingness to partner with our organization through “sweat equity” will be considered.

03

the interview

We conduct a home visit to get to know you, to learn as much as we possibly can about your current and future housing needs, and to determine your willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity-Cape Area.

04

approval

After your application and the interview process is complete, the Cape Habitat staff will present their findings to our board and make our recommendations.

05

your participation

After providing you with the hands-on education and necessary course work—on subjects like home repairs, household budgeting, landscaping and financial planning—you will put in between 200 to 400 hours of “sweat equity” building your home, volunteering at our office or volunteering at our ReStore retail location.

06

closing on your home

You will complete your mortgage agreement and other paperwork with the assistance of our staff.

07

move-in day

You have worked hard, taken the necessary step and realized your dream of homeownership. The construction is complete, the paperwork is all complete and you came together with us to make your home an amazing new reality. Go forward and pursue your life goals knowing you will always have a home waiting for you.
