Myths and Facts about the ReStore

Myth: My donations are not tax deductible.

Fact: Donations made to the ReStore are tax deductible. Habitat for Humanity Cape Area is a charitable organization under tax code 501(c)(3). At the time of donation, the ReStore staff will provide you with a Receipt for Donated Goods that can be used for tax purposes. The form also indicates that Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis did not provide any goods and/or services in exchange for the contribution.


Myth: ReStore revenue goes 100% toward operating costs and not toward families.

Fact: 100% of the ReStore’s profit is financial support for Habitat for Humanity Cape Area. All profits go to the overall operations of the organization, including building secure living environments for families in need.


Myth: The ReStore only accepts dropped off donations.

Fact: If you are interested in donation and require a pick up, we ask that you call us at (573) 651-9080 to speak with a staff member or email us at restore@capeareahabitat.org with a description of the materials you have, your pickup address and contact phone number.


Myth: The ReStore is picky in what it accepts.

Fact: In some cases, the ReStore may find itself overwhelmed with a particular item. If we run out of storage space or fear that incoming donations may be damaged because of a lack of proper space, we may refuse your item. In addition, if your donation does not meet our guidelines, we are unable to accept it. At the time of donation, please ensure the item is clean, free of nails, with all parts connected and does not contain or carry any hazard materials.


Myth: The ReStore is only open to contractors.

Fact: The ReStore is open to the general public.
